New Jersey's National Teenager Scholarship Pageant

Frequently Asked Questions

Congratulations! It's your moment to be a star! America's National Teenager Scholarship Organization offers you the chance to participate in a pageant that combines glamour with goal-driven young women to give you the character-building experience of a lifetime. As a contestant for the Miss National Teenager title, you will be a part of a program that recognizes young women for school and community involvement, communication and leadership skills, and individuality.
We believe in today's young women!

When did the National Teenager Pageant begin?

It began in 1971 as a means for young women to earn college scholarships and have fun while building valuable life skills.

What are the benefits of being in America's National Teenager?

What are the age qualifications and competition divisions?

We offer three age divisions: Preteen ages 9-12, Junior ages 13-15 and Senior ages 16-18. Your age as of August 1, 2008 will determine your division.

I have not competed before; do I have a chance of winning the state/national title?

You sure do! Anyone can do well and even win in our system; many contestants have gone on to win the state and national title on their first try! We will provide you with all the information needed to become a confident and successful contestant.

The Winning Score! Is America's National Teenager a "beauty pageant?"

Definitely Not! At America's National Teenager, we want to provide girls with a positive enriching experience. It is our goal to build self-confidence and reward young women for their scholastic and community achievements. Our scoring system is simple - 30% School/Community Activities, 30% Social and Conversational Skills in Interview, 15% Poise and Personality in Evening Gown, and 15% Personal Expression and 10% On Stage Question. There is NO swimsuit competition.

Sparkle and Shine: What do I wear?

After you apply for the program, you will receive specific information on what to wear and how to prepare for the pageant. You will need an evening gown, but we discourage you from buying a new, expensive dress. There are tons of beautiful dresses available for rent, or you can borrow a dress from a friend. In order to maintain a uniform look for the opening number, we will sell you an inexpensive outfit for production. Remember, America's National Teenager is all about honoring America's extraordinary young women for their achievements. We are interested in you, not what you are wearing.

Can you write like Jane Austen? Got a Voice like Christina Aguilera? We want you to display your talents!

America's National Teenager holds an optional talent and speech competition that is separate from the rest of the pageant and has its own set of judges. Your score in this competition does not affect your overall pageant score. You do not need a talent or perform a speech to compete for the Miss National Teenager title.

If I do not present a talent or speech, will it affect my score with the judges?

Not in any way. The talent and speech portions of the competition are judged by a separate set of judges and are not a part of the competition score.

I would like to be in the pageant, how do I get started?

Getting started is simple...all you have to do is fill out an application, send it to the office along with the $25 registration fee and a recent snapshot and you'll be on your way to becoming a contestant in the oldest and largest teen scholarship pageant in the nation!! Once the application is received in the office, you will be sent an official contestant packet with tons of information to get you started. We offer a FREE workshop to contestants where you will receive information, watch videos of last year's State Pageant, and visit with our reigning queens and ask them questions.

What is a sponsor fee?

The total sponsor fee is $395.00 and can be divided up into payments if you request. The sponsor fee pays for the cost of producing the pageant, your meals and all activities for the weekend. You may have as many or as few sponsors as you wish contributing to make up your total sponsor fee of $395. Sponsor fees are non-refundable.

How do I get sponsors?

The best place to begin is where your family does business. Examples are Cleaners, Insurance Companies, Banks, Doctors, Dentists, local stores, etc. Call ahead to make an appointment, and dress neatly when you visit them. Visiting potential sponsors is good practice for your interview. Most sponsors will want to ask you questions about the pageant.

What do the sponsors receive for sponsoring me?

They receive recognition in the state program booklet where they are listed under your photo on the contestant page. They will also be mentioned during the program, as you are introduced on stage.

Do I have to sell Advertisement to enter?

No, selling advertising is not required. You will be given the opportunity if you wish to sell ads to receive special prizes or awards. This is a great opportunity for you to gain recognition in your community, make sure your hometown and community are recognized in your state program book and earn great prizes like FREE HOTEL NIGHTS! You will receive information that explains the price of the program booklet advertising and all of the prizes and awards that are available.

What does the winner do after they are selected?

As the state pageant winner you will not only represent NJ at the national competition, you will have the opportunity to visit the Governor, travel to Wash DC, participate in parades and fun events, join your sister queens from all over the country for National Teenager sponsored weekend events such as: "Christmas Time in New York" and a "Hurray For Hollywood" trip to LA, these are just some of the opportunities you have with America's National Teenager!

Are scholarships available to those that don't win the title?

National Teenager isn't one of those winner takes all programs; ALL FINALISTS are eligible for various prizes, awards and scholarships!

I have heard that some programs start with a dance number. What is this like and what if I can't dance?

Approximately 4-6 weeks before pageant weekend, you will receive a tape with the choreography for the opening production number; it will be broken down into simple, easy to learn steps. A professional choreographer will be on hand during the weekend to see that everyone looks great when they step on stage!

Do I have to stay at the host hotel?

No. If you live within a "reasonable" distance from Ocean City, you have the option of commuting from home. However; keep in mind you will be changing outfits several times each day, most contestants will tell you for the convenience alone it is best to stay at the host hotel. If you would like to stay at the hotel, there are special discount room rates available for the pageant families and guests. You will also be receiving information about how you can earn Free Hotel Nights in future information packets. Staying at the hotel is not a requirement, it is a convenience for you and your family to help you enjoy pageant weekend even more.
